Discovering Reunion Island’s heritage

Spend a day in the hills above Saint Denis on Reunion Island exploring Creole culture in the company of Monique, owner of the beautiful Domaine de Beaubassin.
From a tour of a traditional Creole house to an introductory lesson in Péi crafts to enjoying a picnic of Reunion Island specialities, this daytrip is designed to give you an authentic experience made for sharing!

Activity schedule:
9:45 a.m.: Meet at the Domaine de Beaubassin
• You’ll be welcomed by the owner Monique and her family, as well as your guide, Sophie.

Three aspects of La Reunion’s heritage will be explored during the visit:
a) Architecture
b) Cuisine
c) Craftsmanship (traditional crafts)

1 - Architecture:
The day begins with an introduction to typical Reunion architecture. Sophie will immerse you in the history and evolution of building on the island. Architecture in Reunion went through several periods linked to its history and economy, making it into the blended and varied source of cultural heritage that it is today. This historical information will deepen your perspective of the Domaine de Beaubassin’s architecture.
Next, you will take a tour of this impressive Creole residence, registered on the list of historic monuments since 2018. Monique will tell you the story of the magnificent, historic family home, which has been partially restored; the two beautiful towers still have the charm of bygone days, and some of the wooden flooring, the doors, and some pieces of furniture date back to the time when the Mazérieux family resided here. In a corner of the dining room, we can still see the gramophone owned by Alfred Mazérieux junior, who apparently enjoyed entertaining.
2– Cuisine:
A country picnic prepared by Sophie to enjoy in the beautiful Forêt des Hauts adjacent to the house will provide an opportunity to taste a few Reunion specialities (fresh fruit juice, acar pickles, samosas, tarte aux brèdes, a quiche made of chayote greens, and various cakes with local flavours).
After this tasty and convivial break, Sophie will take anyone who wishes to discover the Domaine’s forest on a short digestive walk.

3 – Traditional crafts
The afternoon will be dedicated to learning an ancestral craft: weaving coconut palm leaves.
The smiling Rachad will join the tourist group. He will share his knowledge and introduce participants to this Péi craft. Thanks to Rachad’s weaving tips and secrets, each participant will be able to leave the class with their own hand-crafted item.

• Around 4pm: With their leafy creations in tow, the visitors will bid farewell to Monique, Sophie, and Rachad, and depart with their spirits replenished by an abundance of Creole culture.
