Category: Events, Culture
Date: Saturday 30 oct 2021 - Saturday 27 Nov 2021
Come and visit the garden at Maison d’Edith. It will take you back in time, transport you to the beginning of the century. And you will see how ingenious its designers were. As well as being decorative, all the elements of which it is composed had a functional use in the industrial production of rope at the beginning of the century on our island.
You will learn all about the history of this forgotten industrial treasure, making rope from choca, through the life of this family of small-scale farmers as told by a member of the family. You will visit the hundred year old Creole house with its beautifully preserved furniture from that era. You will understand the value of choca, an invasive plant today that was so useful back then! The garden at Maison d’Edith has been listed as a “Remarkable Garden” by the Cultural Affairs Department to encourage and recognise the important conservation work carried out there. The barometer pool, the gigantic schefflera plant, the old water tank transformed into a swimming pool and the stairs made from volcanic rock are just some of the curiosities. As for your guide who lives and breathes history, he will take you on a journey back in time. Tours take place one Saturday every month at 9.30am. Enjoy it! Our tip : For foodies, make the most of being in La Montagne and have lunch at “Le Saint-Bernard” restaurant, renowned for its impressive collection of rums! If you enjoy looking at views, head to Cap Bernard (10 minutes on foot from Chemin de la Vigie) to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire north coast as far as the airport. If you like being active, there are suggestions for hikes in the area on the Rando Pitons website.
